Dental Implants Aldershot

A Dental Implant is an artificial root or “fixture” made from titanium.

Dental implants are placed into the jawbone in an area where a tooth is missing, then a crown or artificial tooth is attached to the implant to replace the missing tooth. A dental implant is generally regarded as the gold standard of missing tooth replacement, as it does not damage adjacent teeth as a bridge does and is rigidly fixed in place, unlike a denture.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial root or “fixture” made from titanium. Dental implants are placed into the jawbone in an area where a tooth is missing, then a crown or artificial tooth is attached to the implant to replace the missing tooth. A dental implant is generally regarded as the gold standard of missing tooth replacement, as it does not damage adjacent teeth as a bridge does and is rigidly fixed in place, unlike a denture.

Is the process painful?

Dental implants are placed surgically. As with all surgery, a certain degree of swelling and discomfort can be expected for a few days after the procedure. However, most people will agree that the discomfort experienced after a dental implant is placed, is significantly less than having a tooth removed. So if you can cope with having the tooth out in the first place, the implant should be easier. Usually antibiotics are given just before and for a few days after the placement of the implant. this greatly reduces the chances of infections after the procedure.

How long does the process take?

Once a dental implant is placed, usually it is left to heal for around three months. This ensures that once pressure is placed on it in the form of a crown, the implant is rigidly held in the bone. If a tooth needs to be removed before the implant is placed, then usually the area is left to heal for two to three months before the dental implant is placed. Occasionally the implant can be placed at the same time the tooth is removed, but this really depends on the situation.

How long do dental implants last for?

Dental implants have the ability to last a lifetime, providing they are well looked after. It could be fair to say that they will last as long as you look after them. Implants can get gum disease around them, just like teeth can, if good oral hygiene is not kept up around them. Dental implant treatments has one of the highest success rates of the treatments dentists provide, with success rates as high as 98% reported. There are factors outside of the dentist’s control that can effect the success of implants. These factors include general health and nutrition. As with any dental treatment, there can be no long term guarantee. Regular dental examinations and dental hygienist visits are extremely important in maintaining dental implants.

Are dental implants expensive?

They may not be as expensive as you would think. As with all of our treatment options, interest free or low cost finance is available to spread the cost.  Implant treatment could cost as little as £78 per month**.
