Are White Fillings as Strong as Silver Fillings?

dental-filling-white-or-silver-hampshire

White fillings, also known as composite fillings, have improved significantly in strength and durability over the years. While they may not be as inherently strong as silver (amalgam) fillings, modern composite materials have been designed to provide sufficient strength for most routine dental restorations.

Composite fillings are bonded directly to the tooth structure, which helps to reinforce and strengthen the tooth. They are suitable for small to medium-sized cavities in both front and back teeth. However, in cases where there is a large cavity or significant biting forces are involved, your dentist may recommend alternatives such as inlays, onlays, or dental crowns, which provide additional strength and protection.

It’s important to note that the strength of any filling also depends on factors such as the location of the tooth, the amount of tooth structure remaining, and your oral habits. Regular dental check-ups and maintenance are crucial for the long-term success of any filling, regardless of the material used.

Overall, while composite fillings may not be as strong as silver fillings, they offer improved aesthetics and can provide sufficient strength for most common dental restorations. Your dentist will assess your specific situation and recommend the most appropriate type of filling based on your individual needs.
